An Innovative Approach on CBRNe
Published on June 16, 2025 by Jan Van Rossem

What sets this exercise apart is our innovative approach to communication and safety monitoring. Using Real Wear AR glasses, frontline responders will receive real-time, hands-free guidance during the donning and doffing of protective gear, improving procedural accuracy and efficiency. Additionally, we are integrating Cosinuss° wearable technology to continuously monitor the vital signs of healthcare workers, ensuring their well-being while operating in high-risk environments. By combining cutting-edge augmented reality and real-time biometric monitoring, UZ Brussels is redefining medical response training for CBRNE scenarios, enhancing both safety and operational effectiveness in crisis situations.
What is CBRNe
CBRNe stands for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive threats. These hazards pose serious risks to public health and safety, often requiring specialized response teams to manage contamination, medical treatment, and crisis containment. CBRNe incidents can occur due to accidents, terrorist attacks, or natural disasters, making preparedness and response training essential for first responders and medical personnel.
What do we exercise?
A decontamination exercise is a training simulation designed to prepare emergency responders and healthcare professionals for handling individuals exposed to CBRNe hazards. The goal is to safely remove contaminants, prevent the spread of hazardous agents, and ensure proper medical care for affected individuals. During a decontamination exercise, participants practice:
- Donning (putting on) and doffing (taking off) protective equipment to minimize exposure.
- Triaging patients to identify those needing urgent medical care.
- Using decontamination showers and procedures to remove harmful substances.
- Coordinating medical and emergency response teams to ensure efficient treatment and containment.
These exercises help improve response times, enhance safety protocols, and ensure healthcare workers are fully prepared for real-world CBRNe incidents.
Why do we use technology
Effective CBRNe response requires seamless communication and real-time health monitoring. On top of that safety requires airtight protections. By integrating advanced technology we aim to enhance both efficiency and responder safety.
RealWear AR Glasses provide hands-free, real-time audiovisual communication, ensuring teams can receive guidance, access protocols, and document procedures without disrupting operations.
Cosinuss° Wearable Sensors monitor core temperature and heart rate, allowing supervisors to track responder well-being and prevent heat stress or exhaustion.
By combining RealWear for communication and Cosinuss° for health monitoring, we ensure a safer, more efficient decontamination process.
By integrating RealWear AR glasses for hands-free communication and Cosinuss° wearable sensors for real-time vital monitoring, we are enhancing both efficiency and safety in CBRNe decontamination. This innovative approach ensures better coordination, improved decision-making, and increased responder protection during high-risk operations.
